Since 1977, Kremer Pigmente has been producing the finest quality historical and modern pigments for customers worldwide. Starting as a one-man company founded by chemist Dr. Georg Kremer, the brand has been steadily growing to international acclaim.
It All Started with Pigments
In 1970, founder and chemist Dr. Georg Kremer was given a request from a friend to create an intense blue shade made of cobalt-containing glass, which was no longer available at the time. The pigment had been used historically by ancient Egyptians and found a revival in popularity during the Baroque-period. After extensive research, Kremer was able to recreate the pigment recipe which served as a foundation for what Kremer Pigmente does today.
The company rapidly expanded as they continued reviving rare pigments found in ancient history such as vermilion, smalt, and lapis lazuli. In 1984, the founder purchased an old flour mill in Aichstetten in the Allgäu region of Germany, which they converted into a Colour-Mill. This building is now the home to the majority of Kremer’s pigment production, while also serving as a warehouse, a sales headquarters, and showroom.
Today the company produces 1500 pigments of only the highest quality and purity, from recreations of historical pigments to brand new creations. They’ve become the world market leader in the field of historic pigments, and are now carried here at Above Ground Art Supplies! The company produces 250 of its 1500 pigments in their historic colour mill. Due to their highest quality and purity standards, Kremer Pigmente has become the world market leader in the field of historic pigments.
“Our research surrounding old recipes of traditional paint brings the spotlight back to many long-forgotten colours. In addition, we experiment with many different materials such as stones, bones or roots which allows us to create new, unknown shades and variations of hues,” says David Kremer, CEO, stemming from the second generation of the Kremer Family. Besides the handmade historic pigment range, Kremer Pigmente also distributes modern, synthetic pigments.
Kremer Pigment Sets
These curated assortments of Kremer’s world-class pigments are structured introductions that help you choose combinations and themes. Small jars are put together according to different topics like ‘kremer-made pigments’ or ‘icelandic earth colours’ inspired by colours found in the natural world.
Icelandic Earth Colours
In the western part of Iceland, around the volcano Snaefellsjoekull, a great variety of minerals can be found. In cooperation with landscape painter Peter Lang, Kremer collected three vibrant earth colors during the midsummer season: Snaefellsjoekull Red, Heydalsvegur Yellow and Brimisvellir Green to create this set.
