Fabriano is an Italian fine art paper company founded in its namesake city in 1264. With centuries of craftsmanship behind it, Fabriano blends deep-rooted tradition with ongoing innovation, producing high-quality papers grounded in generations of papermaking expertise.
A 13th-Century Legacy of Craftsmanship
Beginning in the city of Fabriano, Italy, preserved parchment documents trace the first evidence of cotton paper production to 1264. In their pursuit to distinguish and authenticate their work, Fabriano’s master papermakers drew inspiration from wool weavers’ marks, developing “invisible” watermarks visible only when held to the light.
This spirit of innovation marked the start of Fabriano’s long-lasting legacy, creating trusted papers later used by renowned figures such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Giambattista Bodoni, and Georgia O’Keeffe.
